02 and EE Customers Scam Alert

02 and EE customers are being targeted by African phone scammers. The latest outbreak seems to have started last weekend and users are receiving calls from Botswana, Cape Verde and Guinea. The scam works by the fraudsters calling and then hanging-up, trying to trick users into calling back on what are premium rate numbers. Its an old scam, called “wangiri”, which is actually Japanese for “one ring and drop”, this type of fraud is said to cost the telecom sector a staggering £27 billion per year.

DO NOT RETURN MISSED INTERNATIONAL CALLS UNLESS YOU KNOW THE NUMBER/CALLER

Tips and Advice

  • Check your bill – if you are a 02 or an EE customer, it is worth keeping an eye on your account to make sure there are no unexpected international call charges
  • Report it – to 02 by texting CALL to 7726 and they will respond with some questions for details. EE customers should do the same
  • Block the number – if you keep getting these calls, block the number by going to your call log click on the number and the “Block this caller” feature
  • ID Protection –  If you’re worried about identity fraud and would like to protect your identity contact CIFAS
