137,000 UK Android Phones Infected Scam Alert

Researchers have discovered that 137,000 UK Android phone users have been infected by malware which delivers Ads to malicious sites. Worldwide 25 million people are affected by the malware which hits users who have downloaded Apps from the app store 9apps.com. Users who experience ads at strange times, such as when they open WhatsApp, need to act. The malware is not the most virulent kind but anything which can impersonate legitimate apps and posts content is to be avoided!

Tips and Advice

  • Experiencing unwanted ads? – Go to Settings, then Apps and Notifications, then App Info List and look out for apps with names such as Google Updater, Google Installer for U, Google Powers and Google Installer. Click into any of these suspicious apps and choose Uninstall
  • Don’t Click! – Never click on any links or attachment unless you are 100% sure of the authenticity of the sender
