GOV.UK Penalty Text Scam Alert

Fraudsters are further milking the COVID-19 situation with a campaign of scary looking fake text messages claiming to be a £250 fine for being out of the home more than once a day. The text goes onto threaten an even greater fine of up to £5000. The text says that payment will be automatically taken from your account unless you call the number listed.

Tips and Advice

  • Don’t click – on any attachments to unexpected emails. Go to UK Government website for the latest information instead
  • Personal means private! – Do not divulge personal details unless you are certain who you are communicating with
  • Report it – to ActionFraud  and your mobile provider by forwarding the message to 7726, all operators use 7726 except Vodafone who use 87726
  • Contact – your bank or credit card company if you have already given out any financial details
  • Still Unsure? – Call Reassura 0800 888 6400 and one of our fraud advisors will help you to stay safe
  • To report a fraud – and receive a police crime reference number call Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or use their online fraud reporting tool
