Microsoft Driver Update Scam Alert

We have been getting a lot of calls about an email scam titled “Driver Update Tool Required” which claims “Your driver update tool is about to expire. To keep your devices updated and stable you can renew your subscription by clicking….”. The link takes you to a PayPal payment page where you can pay £49.95 for nothing! Even though statistically one in three of us will be the victim of cybercrime this year this is an easy one to ignore.

IGNORE ANY EMAIL OR MESSAGE ASKING FOR PAYMENT FOR DRIVER UPDATES

Tips and Advice

  • Windows drivers updates – are free and so anything asking for payment should be ignored
  • Don’t click – on any attachments or links unless you 100% must, its very difficult to see which emails are genuine and so wherever possible avoid clicking
  • Check for Malware – Its worth running Malware Bytes free version if you keep getting this kind of message as a pop-up as it will remove unwanted adware
  • Report it! – mark any such email as junk/spam
  • Stay protected – make sure your anti-virus software is up to date, it provides another layer of defence from going to any suspicious websites
