Microsoft Office “Unable to Verify Subscription” Email Scam

Reassura’s anti-fraud specialists have become aware of an email phishing scam designed to steal your Microsoft login details, this could give fraudsters access to your email account which holds a lot of your personal data. The email claims your mailbox has been disabled and that you need to click the link to verify your subscription.

This email is not from Microsoft!

The links in this convincing looking email lead to a cloned website (that looks like the real Microsoft website) but is designed to harvest and exploit your personal information.

DO NOT CLICK ON ANY LINKS IN EMAILS YOU RECEIVE UNLESS YOU ARE CERTAIN THAT THE SENDER IS GENUINE

Tips and Advice

  • Check the email contains your name – Microsoft will always personalize an email to you.
  • Check the email address – does the email address look like one that Microsoft might use? The stranger the address, the more suspicious you should be.
  • Check for spelling and grammar – are there any spelling mistakes, missing full stops or other grammatical errors? This one does however, have unusually good grammar!
  • Check the links go to the Microsoft website – hover over the links in the email to see their destination and check the web address carefully. If you are not sure, go directly to the Microsoft site (Not using the link).
  • Check & Check again – If you are not sure if it is a genuine email, go to Google and search for the organization’s customer support telephone number and give them a call, in this case it is 0344 800 2400
  • Never provide details by email – Microsoft will never ask you to reply to an email and provide bank details or personal information.
