New BT Phone Scam Alert

Most people are aware of the BT phone scam where a cold caller calls up demanding payment of an unpaid bill, however a new twist on the old scam is fooling a lot of people. The fraudsters now “prove” to their victims that they are from by BT “temporarily” disconnecting the line. The victim tries to call out after the call ends with the fraudster and finds no dial tone or anything, the fraudster has just stayed on the line and muted their phone. When the fraudster calls the victim back with the threat to permanently disconnect the line it feels very real. Even non-BT customers are falling for this as the fraudsters claim that Virgin and Sky customers also must pay BT. The amount usually asked for is relatively low, however once the credit card number is handed over much larger sums have been taken. Last year there were more than 50,000 reported cases of computer software service fraud.
